Saturdays

I love Saturdays!  I went to Weight Watchers this morning and I'm down 2.8lbs.. quite happy with that!  I go to meetings @ 7am ( 9am is packed and honestly, I don't have the patience to wait around for the meetings to start). Meetings finish up around 8am, so I figured since I was up and on the go, it would be ideal to go to the gym right after and have my workout done for the day - success !

As per one of the staff @ W. W. she suggested I concentrate on cardio right now, as any weight work I do could cause my weight to maintain or even go up, and doesn't want me to get discouraged. I also get measured once a month @ the gym, so if nothing else I'll at least see my inch loss - please God.

My routine @ the gym consisted of 10 minutes of light cardio on the treadmill, and because of the advice I was given @ W. W. I only did the circuit once, but continued to do 10 reps - 1 set. After I finished up with the machines I went back to the treadmill. Did a quick 5 minute warm up and went on to my 45 minute workout on level 6, followed by 5 - 10 minutes  of cool down ( I can't remember if I had the patience to do the full 10 minutes today).

Saturdays I let myself indulge without really keeping track of what goes in, but I do, however, keep a mental note so as not to go completely nuts.

After my workout I had 2 breakdfast wraps from Tim's ( 1 bacon, 1 sausage) with a hashbrown & my coffee, of course ! And then lunch time I had some pizza that was left over from last night - but I was able to ignore it last night.. .I stayed in our room & watched my show.. it's more important to do well on the scale on Saturday mornigns than it is to eat pizza on Friday nights.  There's an ice cream cake in the freezer as D's birthday is Tuesday, however I won't touch that until he decides he wants to go for it.

The original plan was to go out for lunch/supper today for D's birthday as I was wroking, but since they've had to let me go - blessing in disguise I say, more gym time! - We're going to celebrate his birthday on Tuesday and then go out. I've already got my plan in place. Swiss Chalet - his favourite -  and my plan's in place. Peel off the skin of the chicken breast, and yes, I'm taking my kitchen scales with me so I can measure the amoutn of chicken I eat, and I'll be having steamed veggies instead of fries/potatoe, etc.  I really don't mind 'cause I know the payoff will be evident again next Saturday when I step on the scales.

Happy Weekend, everybody!

Success

I hit the gym Thursday - Sunday, but rarely do I make it 4 days, however I'm really hoping to accomplish that this week. My other half has parent teacher meetings today, but hopefully I'll still make it to the gym in time to get a workout in before it closes.

Thursday I started my new routine.. and it felt great !  I started with 10 minutes of light cardio, followed by 2 sets of circuit training. It's all upper body ( arms, chest & back) which is great since my workout on the treadmill really works my legs & bum. After I completed the circuit twice, I did a 5 minute warm up on the treadmill and did the random program I usually do and increased my level to 6 this week. My speed varied between 3.2mph & 3.4mph. I've done my highest incline yet of 5.0. After my 45 minute random setting workout, I cooled down for 10 minutes. Boy, did it feel awesome !!!!

I'm so excited to get to the gym again tonight. Please God D's home so I have enough time to do at least a cardio workout, though I'd really like to get in my weights, so we'll see!

Saturday we're celebrating D's birthday since it's on Tuesday, Saturday makes for a better day to celebrate, plus it's my 'free' day in terms of Weight Watchers, which is when I get weighed. Fingers cross the scale is showing a decrease in weight, however it's not uncommon for weight to go up in people who have recenlty begun a workout regime, so I'm not worried even if it's the same, even up.. I know what I'm doing during the week - I'm eating within my daily alotted points and I hit the gym ( as far as W. W. is concerned) Sunday, Thursday & Friday before I'm weighed.

Happy Friday, all ! Have a fab weekend :)

New jeans - wooo hoooo!

Ah! So last night I realized that the jeans I had been wearing were needing to be replaced. So, I gotta outta bed this morning with a mission in mind - new jeans that fit... Honestly, I was kinda dreading it. I know the Old Navy carries jeans in a larger size selection and the pricing is great - $40 a pair, can't go wrong. I brought 2 pairs, same size and style in the dressing and they fit! WOOOO HOOOO! Now, I only picked up one pair in the darker wash as they're more slimming, and when losing weight, I'm not a fan of paying full price for something I'm only going to wear for a short period of time.  Guess the cottage cheese & fruit is paying off !

I find that as an adult, I eat a lot of things that I'm not a huge fan of, but I try new things & I learn to like - as my Father would say - a lot of things that I know are only going to benefit a slimming wasit line. So happy!

To boot, I'm heading off to a friend's wedding June 2nd, with a great friend in tow. Girls weekend!!! Great excuse to get a new outfit for my slimmer figure. I'd be so proud and excited to wear a size smaller than what I am now. Oh yeah, the jeans are an 18.. I never thought I'd see the day where I'd be happy to be in that size, but I'm just thrilled about my accomplishment, and I know I won't be in an 18 for long ;)

Happy Hump Day!

Helpful tools

So, as you all know I'm following the W. W. program which is a lifestyle based on point values given for any serving of ANY food. For those of you even just interested in keeping track or being aware of how many calories, grams of fat, fibre, protein etc that you consume you should find out the restaurant's nutritional calculator !  I use Tim Horton's & Subway religiously !  It certainly helps me in planning when I know I'm going to be out during a meal, or a part of the day when I usually have a snack and have forgotten to bring something with me.  Early this afternoon I was out running errands and didn't have a chance to have lunch before I left so knowing that Tim's isn't too high on the points for meals ( mind you, I'm not referring to any of the sweet stuff)  I got my 2 BBQ chicken snack wraps and was pleasantly surprised when I got home what their points value is.  On my way to work ( Mon - Wed) I usually grab something from Tim's with my coffee as I work @ 5:00pm so I was able to plan this afternoon when I'm going to order when I go by on my way to work. Little things like this really help, and I still get to enjoy what I want when out and about, it's up to me how I use my points, and I love the flexibility I have in my life - thank God for that !  Now, the next thing is to get food off my mind, certainly in terms of it being a reward etc.

Hope you're all getting to enjoy spring weather!

Trying new things

So, I find that I get in a rut of eating the same things over and over. Trying new things helps to keep me focused on this weight loss 'adventure'.  I have to be honest, I don't cook a whole lot, I usually go for the things are quick - raw veggies, sandwiches, salads and the like. I really like soup, even though they tend to be quite high in sodium, but I picked up a new one yesterday which I'm having right now and it's really delish! It's winter squash & carrot soup. So happy I picked it up!

When at the gym on Sunday and going through the various machines we discovered that I couldn't use one, I guess because I'm so thick across my chest. This machine is designed to work your abs, however we were told by our instructor that it's not that effective, from what she's experienced & what others have told her. She took us to the mats and showed us some alternative ab exercises, other than cruches. WELL ! I did 5 exercises ( can't remember the proper name for them now) and that's ALL I could do. Well, in the middle of the night I went to turn over in my bed and I felt what work I had done on my abs yesterday - woo hoo! I'll describe the movement if you'd like to try, or if you konw the correct name ;)

Lie flat on your back, legs out straight. Lift your legs so they're perpendicular to the floor. Lower them WITHOUTH touching the floor. Hold them as close to the flow as possible and raise them again. Remember to keep your neck, back, and hips on the floor. What a workout ! For the next two weeks I'm to do 5.. hahaha.

The Plank is a great move to improve all over core strengthening which will help for doing ab exercises.

Have  a great day!

Yay, weekends!

So, I generally hit the gym Thursday - Sunday as often as possible. I try to get there at least once each day, but thus far I haven't been successful, but that's ok.. I always get there at least 3 times.

Today I went to the gym for 12:00 to meet with one of the staff to do an orientation for the various machines, and in so doing we've figured out my program for the next 2 weeks. So excited !!!!  When asked how many hours I have available each visit I committed to 2 so she did up my routine based on an hour - 2 hrs..I figure hey, if I have to 'schedule' me time, and since Donny's home to look after Nicholas, I should definitely commit to 2 hrs a visit, afterall, it's only 4 times a week, which I'm aiming for next week.

Usually I like to get to the gym on Saturdays when Im' off @ 1:00pm, however family were visiting and watned to go to lunch, and I certainly didn't want to seem like a 'gym snob' and choose a workout over seeing them, but in the future, I will not be giving up a gym session for food. that's for sure !

So, Saturday mroning I rejoined Weight Watchers and am so greatful I did ! I already feel a difference in my attitude, so for that I'm really greatful.

That's my weekend in a nutshell - W.W., gym, and just feeling really great about accomplishing my goals, for me ;)

Happy Friday !

Even though I'm on maternity leave Fridays are still my favourite day of the week. Tomorrow I'm rejoining Weight Watchers, and I'm really stoked ! I personally need to be accountable for what goes in my mouth. I've taken 2 months off from it and haven't had much, if any, success. I thought maybe I could do this on my own, but I'm not at the point yet, and that's ok !

Yesterday, I went to the gym and had a great workout !  I was gonna start jogging & intervals, but instead, I decided to stick my routine and just increase the level at which I work out.  It's always better to walk on an incline ( I do a lot of treadmill work). So, I really enjoy the random program. It has levels 1 - 20. The first week I did the program at level 3 and varied my speeds between 3.3 mph and 3.5 mph, the same with level 4. When I started at level 5, I did find that 3.5 mph was a little too much, so I hoovered between 3.3 and 3.4, but I felt great ! I always start off with a good 5 minute warmup and due to the variation of inclines during my workout ( 45 minutes) I always do a 10 minue cool down, so all in all I get in 1hr, and it feels great ! I don't know if anyone else finds this, but I seem to get my "second wind" as they say at 25 - 30 minutes in, and I love it !

I'm thinking I'll need to upgrade my iPod, however. Currently I have 120 songs on, but I don't have iTunes on my new laptop, so maybe that's another investment I should consider in the near future. When it comes to having the proper "tools" for working out, the cost is certainly worth, afterall, I'm worth it.

I've also been thinking about getting to the pool once a week. With my work schedule it's hard to fit in working out Mon - Wed 'cause honestly, I just want to go out on my own. As much as I love Nicholas, it's nice to go to my workout COMPLETELY on my own, as I'm sure many of you know. It really is 'me' time.

A friend of mine up here in Calgary ( who's also from home, someone I've grown up wtht all my life) has decided to go to Zumba classes with me. She's currently out of town, so I look forward to our first class, and am thinking Sundays may be a great day to go for a swim. Now, to find a good pair of goggles.

Hope you are all having a fabulous day. Enjoy the weekend !

Friends are great motivators !

So, one of my friends is not the 'work out' kinda girl HOWEVER she's gonna put in the effort and get started at a gym back home and give 'er bicks! So proud of you :D     I find that having friends, regardless of where they are, that are also involved in getting healthy and working hard is a great motivator.

( Please excuse misuse of punctuation, it happens, though I'm pretty anal about it )

When I move home, I've decided to really enjoy what St.John's/CBS & area have to offer, which means taking advantage of various groups ( sports, classes) and the scattered sunny day we get, along with various walking trails.. it's a great way to spend time with friends & not spend money, and the added benefit is the workout !

I have a mountain bike that my parents bought me.. really nice, and great for rough terrain, however having a big bum has made that hard seat rather uncomfortable so it hasn't been used very much.  The plan is to get a good gel cover, maybe even replace the seat, and purhcase a bike rack.. super excited for the friends that are wanting to join me :)    Now, where to buy a 'cool' helmet? Gotta have one, even though I don't plan on riding on the streets.. it's a must.. better to be safe than sorry, especially now that I have a little dude in my life ;)

Stoked to hit the gym this afternoon ! Got 2 new pairs of sneakers on sale, so I'm looking forward to breaking them on the treadmill and start my jogging once again ! Woop woop !

Hope you're all having a great day! And thanks for being there.. this is so helpful :)

Hump day

So, yesterday I didn't eat veggies at all.. bad Sara, haha.  I took Nicholas out in the morning and wrote after I got my coffee, and then I didn't eat again until later last night.. I was hungry from neglecting to eat and ended up ordering pizza & wings.. hahaha.. it was really good ! I did enjoy it, however today I'm feeling guilty. So ! I've decided that even though I'm working until 9pm I'm gonna head over to the 24hr gym this evening. The location I frequent isn't 24hrs but I thought long and hard and ya know, getting up 4:30 in the morning to be back in time to look after Nciholas when he wakes up just isn't reasonable for me, so there ya go !

Gotta new pair of sneakers yesterday, so I'm eager to put them to good use tonight ( http://www.sportchek.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=12134162&cp=3733351.3733543.3735121 )  They're pretty sweet, especially since I got them for $60 ( originally $120 !)

A friend of mine participates in the Tely 10 and we were just talking about it... so I'm thinking that if I'm going to be home early enough in July I'm gonna register to do it ! A goal to work towards, that's for sure.. and a fitness goal always helps in combination with a specific size goal as well ;)

My stomach is really growling.. haven't eaten anything yet today. Thinking of having some Speacial K and milk, or just a really big lunch of veggies... either way I have to get out of this rut of bad habbits.

Speaking of bad habbits, I think tomorrow I'm not going to smoke :)   It doesn't make a lot of sense, to me anyway, to be so health conscious , ya know, wanting to eat properly, get fit, so why smoke?

Just a few more days and I re-join Weight Watchers, and I'm really excited, cause I know how well I'm gonan do ! I was doing extremely well when I first started and going to the gym, so I'm really ready to embrace this lifestyle change. Please God when I get home all my friends and family will notice that I look better than when they last saw me.. that's great motivation right there... that and my gold sequin skirt, size 12 baby!

Have a great day !

Just another day

Good day readers !  First of all, thank so much to the few who have read my first post ! This whole blogging is something new to me, so please bare with me. Also, I realized after posting my first blog there were some spelling errors, and my laptop has a mind of it's own at times, so there have been parts of sentences missing - SORRY !

So, interestingly enough, this morning when I weighed myself I was down 3lbs.. woo hoo ! I have not rejoined W. W. however I am very conscious of what I'm putting in my mouth, so that in combination with a great walk with Nicholas on Satruday, and a fabulous workout on Sunday must be working for me - thank God !

I will tell you, through out some of my posts I will include things I've eaten through out the day, moments of weakness and all that 'good' stuff. Essentially this is my outlet, and I find, like a lot of people, that 'writing' things down help to cope, or just make me feel better in general. So continue reading, if you wish :)  Also, I welcome any comments any readers would like to make, and suggestions as well ! I certainly don't know everything, but I do know what works for me and am always open to new ideas.

I love love LOVE coffee, and I find myself sometimes filling up on it through out the day. Bonus - it's a diuretic ! However, I like to start my mornings off with a glass of water. I've read that on an empty stomch ROOM TEMPERATURE is the best first thing in the morning, so that's what I do. Apparently, you're less likely to get any cramps etc on an empty stomach.  Going back to W. W. points I usually have, daily, a sundried tomatoe bagel toast DRY. I find cutting out little things like butter/margerine help in the long run. I always order a flavoured bagel and honestly, I don't miss the added fat.  Another great bagel to try is the mixed berry.. delicious !

Last night, after work @ 9pm I was a little hungry so I conveniently stopped into Mr.Sub, as it was on my way home, and ordered a honey? ham sub on mutligrain. I had the following : NO CHEESE, ham, lettuce, tomatoe, green pepper, cucumber, pineapply & green olives, MUSTARD ONLY.  Cutting back, again, on certain condiments etc will add up, in a good way ;)

Anyway, today has been a great day so far ! Water, 1 large coffee ( I've stopped adding cream YEARS ago, and have ONLY fresh milk, and sweetner, if anything) & of course, my sundried tomatoe bagel.

Looking forward to lunch, which will probably be raw veggies and some dip. Oh, this is another thing. I must have ~ 5 bottles of salad dressing in my fridge, this way I never get bored of raw veggies and or salad.  I eat tuna religiously as well, and find lots of times I will use ranch OR cucumber dressing instead of mayo or Miracle Whip. I also like mustard in it as well.

Hope you're all having a great day !

A little bit about me...

I'm a 30 year old woman originally from Newfoundland. I'm finding myself here in Calgary until June. I moved to this part of the country in January 2010 as my other half is a teacher, and since teaching positions are limited in NL we decided to check out this side of Canada to see what is has to offer.

So ! Growing up I've always struggled with my weight. A pretty face is nice to have, but being unhappy with my weight really led to feeling unhappy for a long time. It's funny though.. I've always gone through phases where I'd lose the weight, keep it off, and then slowly it'd creep back on.. that's because I never really made any kind of lifestyle change, only temporary, and therefore the results were temperorary.

I always like to walk and exercise, but let's face it, we need to recognize and be aware of what we put in our mouths. I'm a firm believer in " A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips."  I first read this quote when I was quite young, as in 10 years old at my grandparents' house.. this was a fridge magnet of theirs.  I understand why it was positioned so appropriately as my father's crowd certainly enjoy their food, and many of them have struggled with their weight as well, not to mention at about 30 years old my Dad developed type1 diabetes - something I want to stay away from, that's for sure !

When I got pregnant with Nicholas I enjoyed pregnancy to say the least. I gave into to any and all cravings, but thankfully wasn't running out to the store at 2:00am. I loved chocolate milk and cheezies, McDonald's Jr.Chicken with pickles, and ice. Ice cream has always been my ultimate comfort food. I love love love chocolate bars, but I'm only satisfied when I get my dose of ice cream. I think I ate it every day.. there were days I'd have chocolate ice cream ( if we bought it to keep in the house, not that it'd last) with fruit loops.. oh my... but it seemed to hit the spot, as they so, so my attitude was "whatever". Don't get me wrong, I ate quite healthily through out pregnancy, lots of veggies subs and the like, but God, did I ever want that ice cream....

So !  Nicholas was born by c-section on June 16th and through out pregnancy I set the goal for myself that as soon as I was 'able' I'd put my mind to it and get this weight off once and for all. I think just before Nicholas was born I tipped the scales at a whopping 275lbs.... at only 5'6".. I guess having such large hips helped me carry the weight, but when I look at pictures of me post pregnancy, I cringe.

August 27th ( after moving from Northern Alberta back dwon to Calgary, and a 3 week visit home to NL) I started Weight Watchers, and boy am I ever glad !  When I joined I weighed in at 256.4. Today, March 12 I'm at 230.0   The thing is.... I was acutally down to 221 just before Christmas, HOWEVER, we were very fortunate in that my bf's Dad flew us down to Florida for 2 weeks, and even though I had great intentions ( I went to W. W. meetings there, brought my kitchen scales, etc) I still indulged.

I gave up W. W. for a few weeks and it hit me today. At this point in my life with so much weight to lose ( I want to get back down to 150lbs and I know I can :)  ) I need the support and the accountability I feel when attending, so the $16.80 a week is certainly worth it to me.  Like most of you struggling and working hard at shedding the pounds, it seems like it never happens fast enough, but with the program it's a slow process which works well for LONG TERM sucess... you get into a lifestyle.

I enrolled @ Goodlife fitness 2 weeks ago and am glad I did... it's great me time, and I always feel a great sense of accomplishment when I leave the gym. I figure joining Weight Watchers again this Saturday along with a gym routine, and walking with Nicholas, when the weather permits I'll be back to my old self again in no time.. well.. originally, when I had started back in August I was hoping to have most, if not ALL of my weight off, but I got discouraged after Florida. So here we go yet again.

The great thing about W. W. is the support, but on a daily basis you don't get that.. hence this blog. I figured, I could post as often as I want, and this would help me to stick with, and stay positive. It's so funny because my friends find that I'm very motivating, so it's kind of too bad I feel off the wagon, but like anything.. it's never too late to start.. so here we go !
